Hello 4th quarter! I’m back!

Hello everyone!  It is great to be back from maternity leave.  The new baby and family are doing well.  Although I miss my little ones, it is great to be back teaching art.

Kindergarten- Before I left, the students started a 3 dimensional paper giraffe project based on the story Giraffes Can’t Dance by Giles Andrae . The students completed their giraffes by adding spots, gluing on the heads, and putting together the body and tail. 51qvh4MALwL._SX390_BO1,204,203,200_

2.2 Demonstrate beginning skill in the use of tools and processes, such as the use of scissors, glue, and paper in creating a three-dimensional construction.

first grade

In first grade, we started working with a new media, CLAY! We looked at the work of Vincent Van Gogh’s sunflowers. Using sculptural tools, students manipulated the air dry clay  creating their own unique sunflower.

2.3 Demonstrate beginning skill in the manipulation and use of sculptural materials (clay, paper, and paper maché) to create form and texture in works of art.

Second Grade did not meet this week because they were preparing for their 2nd grade musical showcase.

Third grade

The 3rd graders were introduced to a fun art process called foil embossing. The is a 3-4 day process.  Today was day 1. students created a design which had to include the use of lines to show movement and/or rhythm.  The outlined the design with glue and added yarn.

2.6 Create an original work of art emphasizing rhythm and movement, using a selected printing process.

Fourth grade

Our next fourth grade project was tied in with the 4th grade Social Studies standards. We talked about how weaving was used in the everyday lives of the early California indians. We also looked at the work of local San Diego artist, Eva Salazar. We used coffee bean bags (made of burlap) from Cafe Moto, to weave.  The students loved the idea of upcycling.


2.4 Use fibers or other materials to create a simple weaving.

Fifth grade

Before starting our new art lesson, the students read a Native American folktale (which tied in with 5th grade reading and Social Studies standards). The students are making “scratch” paper using crayons, black tempera paint, and a tooth pick.  This week the students used crayons to create the first layer of their scratch paper.  They had to color very dark and hard.  Next week we will create the 2nd layer by painting the entire piece black.  On the 3rd day they will add a raven drawing by “scratching/scrapping” the paper with a toothpick.

2.5 Assemble a found object sculpture (as assemblage) or a mixed media two-dimensional composition that reflects unity and harmony and communicates a theme.

Sixth grade

This week the 6th graders learned how to draw a profile of a person.  Our focus was position and proportions.  This skill will be used to create an ancient Egyptian profile.  We read about Egyptian gods and goddesses. The students will select one of the gods/goddesses to draw.  The media for this project will be chalk pastels and sharpies.

2.1 Use various observational drawing skills to depict a variety of subject matter.


Ms. Torres’ and Mrs. Gersten’s class did not meet due to to the modified day schedule on Monday.

Mrs. Simmons’ class: We started our clay project this week.  We discussed the difference between organic and geometric shapes.  The students decided on an object for the topic of their clay sculpture.  The class created rocks, animals, flowers just to name a few.  Pictures will be posted next week.

2.5 Create an imaginative clay sculpture based on an organic form.
