Week of August 9th and August 16th

Thank you families for supporting the VAPA fundraiser at Blaze Pizza. Ms. C and I are very grateful for your generosity and continued support our Art and Music program. And a special thanks to Wolf Canyon PTA for organizing this awesome event!

Kindergarten and Mrs. Morton’s class did not have art on the Week of Aug. 9th. 4th grade worked on a landscape art project with a substitute.

Kindergarten Aug. 16th : The students completed their line monsters!

First Grade: The students learned about the abstract art of Pablo Picasso. In class, we examined the painting, The Weeping Woman. Using Playcolor sticks, cardstock, and black marker, the students created an abstract self-portrait.

2nd Grade and Mrs. Morton’s class: The students completed their Hello Goodbye-window collage portraits. They look fantastic!

3rd grade: For this art lesson, we focused on an Element of art, shape. We looked at several paintings and photographs of sculptures with geometric and organic shapes. The students began their foil embossed art piece. First, they designed a simple organic shaped drawing. Then they added white glue and yarn to the lines. Next week they will add foil and permanent marker.

5th grade: The students completed their Pop Art words. Afterwards, the students started their Tessellation art. The 5th graders looked at the tessellation art created by M.C. Escher. This art incorporated geometry and art. The students created their “tessellation template”. For the second session, we will tesselate the templates and turn the shapes into art.

6th grade: The focus of the 6th grade lesson was value. We examined the artwork of Mexican-American artist, Elizabeth Catlett. We discussed her use of light and dark in her work, The Sharecropper. For this art project, the students selected a black and white photo. Then they mapped out all the lines and created shapes around the different shades of light and dark. They will continue next week by shading in their photo with pencil.

Mrs. Simmon’s class: The students completed their Paint with Marker Sunflowers inspired by Vincent Van Gogh.

I also wanted to take time and congratulate our very own, Pablo Flores for winning 1st place in the Water is Life Art Contest hosted by the Otay Water District. He was recognized at the last board meeting. Congratulations Pablo!

Here are the very first lessons and projects of the 2021-2022 school year.

Tk: Week 2: We learned about pop artist, Romero Britto. The students created a Mickey Mouse pop art inspired drawing. We focused on adding bright colors, different kinds of lines, and shapes.

TK: Week 3: We studied the art work of painter, Wayne Thiebaud. We examined his paintings of desserts and his use of thick paint to add texture to the frosting. The students created a collage using the Tear Art process to create an ice cream cone.

Kindergarten: week 2: We studied the art work of author and illustrator Linda Kranz. She paints rocks to make them look like fish. The students created their own fish inspired by the fish in the story, You be You. They using scarpbook paper, black marker, and crayons.

Kindergarten Week 2: This week we focused on how artists use lines to express mood, create movement, and show texture. Students began their line monster by drawing 5 different kinds of lines with black marker on white construction paper. Then they added color using Playcolor Tempera Sticks in the spaces in between. Next week they will add eyes, a mouth, and cut out the monster’s body.

1st Grade and SDC Tk-1: This week we read the art Cat and Bird by modernist artist, Paul Klee. Students created their own Cat and Bird art piece using construction paper, scissors, glue, and construction paper crayons.

2nd Grade and SDC 2-4: We studied the artwork of Caldecott award artist, Chris Raschka. We examined the illustrators from the book, The Hello. Goodbye Window. Students created their own “hello goodbye window”. by making a paper collage of themselves. They will need one more week to complete the art.

3rd Grade and SDC 2-4 We studied art from India. We focused on the textile art of rug making. In India bright colors, and patterns are used in Dhurrie Rugs. Student created their own Dhurrie rugs with card stock, Playcolor Tempera Sticks, and yarn.

4th Grade and SDC 4th-6th: For this lesson, we discussed art from Japan called Notan Art. We focused on the contrast between the positive and negative space. We also focused on symmetry and balance. Students created their own Notan art using the “expand the square” process with construction paper squares and glue.

5th Grade: For our first lesson, we learned about the life and art of Pop artist, Roy Lichtenstein. Lichtenstein’s art was characterized by his use of primary colors, Benday dots, layered shapes, movement lines, and onomatopoeia. Students created their own onomatopeia collage following Lichtenstein’s style.

6th Grade: Paint with marker koi fish
